Bump charts are really a specialized case of the line chart which are used to view the change in rank over time.
This chart depicts a handful of countries from the World Database and their change in ranking relative to the GDP per capita.
GDP per capita is a measure of average income per person in a country. GDP stands for Gross domestic product. This measures National income / National Output and National expenditure. GDP per capita divides the GDP by the population. Real GDP per capita takes into account inflation.
The bump chart is useful for indicating rank relations between different entities, in this case a country's or region's GDP per capita.
Bump charts depict relationships via rankings without displaying the magnitudes between them.
They are useful for indicating things which are ranked such as universities or sports teams.
This variant is based upon James Curley's excellent prototype.
