Visualization Implementation VI5

Get it Right in Black and White

1) Breaking the Rule of Thumb:

The “Get it right in Black and White” rule of thumb is visually encoded wrong in the barchart above as the data is represented in a solid color ignoring the luminance channel requiring the viewer to do more work. Not only does the viewer need more time to process the graphic it also decreases the value of the critical aspect of how the chart is ordered.

2) Rule of Thumb Correct Use:

The second chart shows the correct representation of the luminance channel for the “Get it right in Black and White” rule of thumb. The luminance of the bars in the chart increases in tandem with the data value increase. This visual encoding gives the viewer a feel for the critical aspect of what the graphic is trying to represent.
