Hilbert Map of NCBI

The NCBI Taxonomy database is the standard nomenclature and classification repository for the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC). It includes the names and the taxonomic lineages of all the known organisms. The classification is a phylogenetic taxonomy in which the structure corresponds with the evolutionary history of the tree of life. The top level of the taxonomy is composed by Cellular Organisms, Viruses, Viroids, Unclassified sequences and Other sequences. Overall the taxonomy contains 1.482.059 entries (Data have been downloaded on july 2016).

The taxonomy can be explored by zooming into the map. Generic regions are replaced by their sub-regions representing their children in the taxonomy. The maximum level of zoom allows to visualize tiles representing the leaves of the classification.
